Walter L Powell

Walter L. Powell, 95, of Kansas City, MO passed away September 3, 2018. Walter was born August 25, 1923 in Plattsburg, Missouri to Walter L. Powell, Sr. and Helen (Quell) Powell. He graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1941. He served in the Army from February, 1943 until December, 1945. He was a Tec 5 in the 866th Aviation Engineers Battalion and served in the Pacific Theater. On October 13, 1956, Walter married Ethel Grabhorn at Visitation Catholic Church in Kansas City, MO and was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church since 1958 where he was involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and volunteered as an usher.
For 25 years, Walter owned and operated Powell Furniture Services which provided furniture refinishing and repair services in the Greater Kansas City area. His love for boy scouting was immense and he served as the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 16, Boy Scouts of America during the time his sons were in the troop and for years following. He was an Honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and was the first recipient of the Walter Powell Silver Camping Beads Award which was created to annually recognize a scouts dedicated service. Walter was extremely proud to have served his country and at the age of 93, was blessed to have the opportunity to visit Washington DC with the Heartland Honor Flight as a WWII veteran, an experience he deeply treasured.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ethel and his brother, William (Billy). He is survived by his children, Donna Myers, Charles Powell, Carol Morris (Kenny) and Craig Powell (Elaine); Grandchildren, Brian and Jeff Myers, Andrew and Patrick Morris, Sarah, Ann, Grace and Mary Powell and three great grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at Muehlebach Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO where the rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8th at St. Elizabeth Church, 2 E. 75th Street, Kansas City, MO. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Church or Heartland Honor Flight.
