Gene was born May 13, 1926 to Ray B. and Zela E. Hutchison in Kansas City, MO. He graduated from Southwest High School, joined the US Navy as soon as could and served on a merchant marine tanker during WWII as a signalman. Whenever they were not out at sea, he was honored to serve the Lord by leading music in chapel services. After the war he attended Kansas University and earned an engineering degree. While at KU, his brother, Ray Jr., introduced him to his future wife, Treva, also a student at William Jewell along with her sister, Wilma. Brothers married sisters!
Genes mechanical engineering career began with Bendix, and the Vendo Company, both in Kansas City. Due to Vendo shifting its mission to research, a sandwich vending company in LaCrosse, WI hired him. While there, Choice Vend in Connecticut contacted him to join them and Gene told them he would prefer to be at his current job for a minimum of one year before making a change. After being in Connecticut for approximately three years, they were homesick and he found a job with OptiCopy in Lenexa.
Consecutive with the above work positions, Gene volunteered to serve in various leadership positions wherever he attended church. Music was a huge part of his life; therefore, you would frequently find him in the choir. He filled in as music leader as needed and was privileged to lead music for revivals where his brother was preaching. He also served as a deacon, church treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, and Training Union Director, as well as creating artwork for special events.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1-2 NASB
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Treva I. Hutchison and his brother, Ray Jr. Hutchison. He is survived by his daughters, Dawn Hearn, Cynthia Rice and husband Rex, and Terry Anderson; his sister, Dawanda Karr and husband Rev. Howard Karr, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and a great great grandchild is on the way.
