Verna Jean Chalfant

May 6, 1938 — August 15, 2021

Verna Jean Chalfant, 83, of Overland Park, KS passed away peacefully, surrounded by all of her family on August 15, 2021. Verna was born on May 6, 1938 in Kansas City, MO to parents Harold Vernon and Thelma Holbrook. Verna is preceded in death by their twin daughters of one day on 6/10/1960. Verna is survived by her husband of 63 years, Vernon C Chalfant, daughters Linda J Eaton (husband David Eaton), Jeannine R Beal (Husband Perry Beal) and grandchildren, Justin T Francis (Wife Kelly Francis) and Jillian Holbrook Beal. Additional grandchildren by marriage, Andrea Beaman, Niki Conley, Kyle Eaton and Alex Beal, Jack Beal. Great grandchildren, Connor, Will and Brian Francis and additional great grandchildren, Zoie Beaman and Frances "Frankie" Conley.
Verna was an only child. She lost her father, a Marine in WWII, at the age of 7. Her mother, Thelma, was also an only child. They both made many close lifelong friends who become their extended family. Verna met Vernon on a blind date and were married within 8 months. Verna worked at Kansas City Life, was a waitress for many years and volunteered at her daughters schools. Linda and Jeannines friends knew and loved Verna and appreciated her creativity and humor. Verna played many sports and was known to kick and throw the football further than any of the boys in high school. She was a tennis champion several years in a row at the Indian Creek Racquet Club. She played volleyball and loved to dance. Over the years, Verna struggled with Fibromyalgia but continued to love gatherings with family and friends as a way to stay connected.
She was also an avid sports fan. She loved to watch the Chiefs and keep up with all of the players and stats to converse with her grandchildren. She always attended Justins premier soccer games and traveled to many tournaments and soon became the Team Crushers grandma. Verna also had the front row seat to all of Jillians theater and dance performances. In addition, Verna loved to sing and had a beautiful voice, lending her golden pipes to numerous church choirs.
In her later years she contracted Corticobasal Degeneration. It may have limited her abilities, but it did not dampen her kind heart and sense of humor up until her recent passing.
