Vera M. Huffman

April 18, 1930 — November 1, 2025

Springfield, Missouri

Vera (Vee) Mae Huffman (née Roberts) passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on April 18, 1930, in Phelps City, Missouri, Vera lived a long and full life defined by resilience, hard work, and quiet determination.

Vera married the love of her life, Perry Huffman, and together they raised two children, Chuck and Suzette. As a devoted military wife, Vera followed Perry around the world during his service, creating a steady and comfortable home wherever they were stationed from Seattle to Japan to their eventual home in Kansas City.

After Perry’s passing in 1971, Vera faced life’s hardships with remarkable independence and resolve. She worked as a tailor to support her family and was a talented seamstress known for her exceptional skill and attention to detail. Her beautiful quilts became treasured heirlooms, each one a reflection of how she showed love.

Vera was an avid gardener, known affectionately as a plant whisperer, creating a veritable garden wonderland both indoors and out. Her backyard was home to a large apricot tree grown from the pit of a fruit she ate and she was able to donate a rare plant specimen to a botanical garden.

In addition to gardens, Vera cultivated a community of friends and neighbors. She kept in touch with family and classmates from her hometown but also loved getting to know children and families in her neighborhood. She was affectionately an honorary grandmother to many, sending cards and notes for every birthday or occasion even after those neighbors moved away.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Suzette Nesbitt Walker (Jeff Walker) her two granddaughters, Rachael Huffman (Miles Strombach) and Gayla Goleman (Aaron & Owen Goleman) and her sister, Lois (Junie) Curry along with many other extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Huffman; her son, Chuck Huffman; and her brother, Gene Roberts.

A service celebrating Vera’s life will be held on Thursday, November 6th, at 10:30am at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories of a woman whose strength and perseverance shaped the lives of those around her. Interment at 3:00 pm at Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, Missouri.

Her life was stitched together with courage, precision, and love—and her legacy endures in lives she touched and every piece of work she left behind.
