Theresa M. Michaelis

Theresa M. Michaelis, age 93, of Kansas City, MO, was greeted by our Lord on Jan. 7, 2021. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 8:30 am Tuesday, Jan. 12th with Mass of Christian Burial following at 9 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8510 Wornall Rd., KCMO 64114. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimers Association and/or Christ the King Catholic Church.
Theresa graduated high school in Iron River, MI where she was a member of National Honor Society. She earned a full scholarship to attend St. Scholastica College in Minnesota, graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude. She worked in the dress department at Marshal-Fields in Chicago and as a secretary for Reynolds Aluminum company before her teaching career in which she spent 30+ years. Theresa met her future husband, Mike, while attending a social club event at Redemptorist Catholic Church. During her professional teaching career, Theresa taught at Visitation, then 4th and 2nd grades at Christ the King Catholic Schools. It was her love of teaching which inspired Theresa to treat each one of her students as her own children.
Theresa and Mike were one of the founding couples of Christ the King Catholic Church. Each summer, Theresa, Mike and their children would take a road trip somewhere fun: she always had a fun (and educational!) itinerary lined up. She enjoyed her two vacations to Europe, visiting both Italy and Germany. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, and greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Theresa was always volunteering throughout her life: She was a Cub Scout leader, Girl Scout leader, or always 'there' for her children, doing things to advance whatever endeavor her children were involved in. At CKS, she was always helping with PTA, was often a room-mother, was a PTA president, helped with church carnivals and other fund raisers, helped with St. Joseph tables, helped Mike with Knights of Columbus activities, was a Blue Army advocate coordinating the circulation of the church's Our Lady of Fatima statues to different parishioners, volunteered with Meals on Wheels through the church and gave of her time for countless other church and school functions. As a teacher, she always put in extra time & energy to her 'kids': only one example is that she chaired or helped put on several all-school plays. Later in life, she volunteered at the clothes pantry at Redemptorist church with her friends as well as at St. Joseph Hospital where she logged 750+ hours.
Theresa was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Francis L. "Mike" Michaelis. She is survived by her children, John Michaelis and Margaret "Maggie" Hanners; grandchildren, Emma and Nate Hanners; a sister, Joan Scarite and husband Bruno, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
