Sterling Daniel “Dan” Haning, 74, of Kansas City, MO, passed away August 14, 2023.

Sterling was born to Jewel (Hemphill) and Leo Haning in Pratt, KS, on January 31, 1949.  He graduated from Otis High School in May 1967 and joined the Airforce.  He actively served in the Airforce from May 1967 to January 1971, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.  After his military service, he attended and graduated from Hutchinson Community College and then went to work for UPS in 1973.  He retired in 1998, bleeding brown for 25 years. After retirement from UPS, he worked various jobs and then retired from Apria Healthcare in 2017.  To fuel his love for golf, he started working part-time at various golf courses, his last one being Oakwood Country Club.

Sterling was a gifted and talented gardener who had a special knack with roses.  He always loved BBQ and after getting his hands on his first smoker, he ran with the hobby and participated in several competitions over several years in the Midwest.  He and his teammates with Smoke, Wine, and Fun competed in Smokin’ Waldo for 10 years.  He recently became a wine connoisseur and loved attending wine tastings, especially the annual fundraiser for cystic fibrosis. He was a die-hard Jayhawk fan and never missed watching a Chiefs game.  He was a lifelong member of the Elks and VFW Post 5901.

Sterling cared for his wife, Monica, following her stroke May 2017, until he himself suffered a stroke in November 2021.  In March 2022, Sterling and Monica moved to St. Anthony’s Senior Living Community.

Sterling passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospice House on August 14, 2023.  He is preceded in death by his mother and father.  He is survived by his wife Monica, son Christopher Haning (Amy), daughter Amber Danielle Haning Riney (Michael), step-daughter Jennie Curry (Justin), sisters Ida Lea Sohm (Lee) and Deanna Yoshikawa (Rich), grandchildren Ashley Jordan Haning (Trent Smith), Sloan Curry, Isabel Curry, Benjamin Curry, former wife Beth (Schreibeis) Haning, and several nieces and nephews.
