Roy Lee Phelps, Jr.

Roy Lee Phelps, Jr., a cherished father, grandfather, friend, and community member, passed away on August 20, 2025, at Kingswood Senior Living. Born on February 26, 1932, in Fairbury, Nebraska, Roy lived a life filled with love, laughter, and innumerable adventures that will forever echo in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Roy distinguished himself in many roles throughout his life, from his honorable service as a veteran in the Army during the Korean War to his dedicated career in the Railway Mail Service and as a U.S. Post Office letter carrier. He was also a proud small business owner of Phelps Upholstery, where his craftsmanship reflected his creativity and attention to detail.

To his family, he was more than just a provider; he was a constant source of encouragement and joy. Roy’s children, Dale Phelps (wife Julie Kramer) of Port Orchard, WA; Donna Phelps (husband John Huff) of Washington, D.C., and Deloris Phelps of Prairie Village, draw great comfort from their cherished memories of their father. Roy was equally devoted to his three grandchildren: Ann Huff of Washington, D.C., Alexandra Nedblake of Lawrence, KS, and Evie Nedblake of Prairie Village, attending every concert, sporting event, and special occasion, proudly cheering from the sidelines with coffee in hand.

In addition to being a devoted family man, Roy had a passion for life that was evident in all he undertook. He was a talented gardener, earning blue ribbons at the Missouri State Fair, a knowledgeable bird watcher, and an enthusiastic photographer, capturing the beauty of the world around him. His love for sports, especially the Chiefs and Royals, was legendary, with countless hours spent sharing this passion with friends and family.

Those who knew Roy remember him as kind, funny and genuine. He had an undeniable knack for making everyone feel cherished and valued, and he held close connections with friends and neighbors throughout Kansas City.

Despite the loss of his beloved wife, Wilma M. Phelps, and other family members, including his parents Roy Phelps Sr. and Eva Phelps, his sisters Helen Stevens, Doris Johnston, Myra Medlin, Eva Richardson, and his brother Robert Phelps, Roy's spirit persevered. He drew strength from memories of their shared laughter and love, leaving a legacy of bonds that can never be broken.

A funeral service to celebrate Roy’s remarkable life is scheduled for August 25, 2025, at Muehlebach Funeral Care in Kansas City, with a visitation before the service and a graveside service at Memorial Park/Park Lawn Cemetery following.

As we remember Roy Lee Phelps, Jr., let us carry forward his legacy of love, laughter, and kindness. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
