Ronald King Tavernaro, 80, passed away June 7, 2021 in Leawood, Kansas with his beloved wife by his side. Ron was born on July 9, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri to Dorothy Noland and Fred Tavernaro. He graduated from De La Salle High School and then completed his education at Finley Engineering College. In 1961 Ron married the love of his life, Barbara Norton, with whom he was most recently blessed to celebrate 60 years of marriage.
Ron was a licensed professional engineer and his career included work with the Illinois Highway Department, J.A. Tobin Construction Company, and Loch Sand and Construction Company. Rons talents contributed to numerous projects including the paving of Interstate 80 in Illinois, extensive construction at Kansas City International and Wheeler Downtown Airports, building of the Smithville Dam, construction of the Pony Express Bridge in St. Joseph, Missouri, the original excavation work for Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums complex in Kansas City, Missouri, and hundreds of paving and bridge construction projects in the metropolitan Kansas City area. Ron was also an active volunteer and board member for De La Salle High School and was honored as an Alumni of the Year. A member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish for more than fifty years, Ron served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Family was paramount in Rons life and he spent his retirement years surrounded by his beautiful wife, children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert K. Tavernaro, grandson Adam Gibson, granddaughter Theresa Tavernaro, and great-granddaughters Jordan Schoen, and Laila Schoen. Ron is survived by his wife, Barbara Tavernaro, his brother Richard Tavernaro of Kansas City, Missouri, his children Margie (Chuck) Gibson, Patsy (Rob) Johns, Julie (Bruce) Schlatter, Tom (Lynne) Tavernaro, and Amy Sue Douglas, all of Overland Park, Kansas, his grandchildren Chris (Kelly) Gibson of Grandview, Missouri, Aaron (Ann) Gibson, of Overland Park, Kansas, Blake (Kelsey McGee) Johns of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Grant (Ashley) Johns of Rogers, Arkansas, Scott Johns, and Grace Johns of Overland Park, Kansas, Morgan (Ben) Schoen of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kyle (Addie Heck) Schlatter of Roeland Park, Kansas, Nicholas (Olivia) Tavernaro of Houston, Texas, Natalie (Zach) Littlefield of Lexington, Kentucky, Michael Tavernaro of St. Louis, Missouri, Emily (Mike) Conde of Holt Summit, Missouri, Chris (Lauren) Gebert of Ballwin, Missouri, Doug (Kelli Hughes) Gebert of St. Louis, Missouri, Cooper Douglas, Caroline Douglas, and Addison Douglas of Overland Park, Kansas, and great-grandchildren Joseph Stratman, Penelope Gibson, Sophia Schoen, Drake Schoen, Olivia Reinhard, Macklin Reinhard, Owen Conde, August Gebert, and Nora Littlefield along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 14251 Nall Avenue, Leawood, Kansas 66224. A rosary will be prayed at 1:00PM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Place, 11901 Rosewood St., Leawood, Kansas 66209 or Good Shepherd Hospice, 1317 S. Fountain Dr., Olathe, Kansas 66061
