Phyllis Lopez, a beloved educator and cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, at St. Anthony's Senior Living Community in Kansas City, Missouri. Born on August 12, 1939, in Kingman, Kansas, Phyllis dedicated her life to nurturing the minds of young children and guiding them with her kind spirit.
For most of her career, Phyllis shared her passion for learning as a teacher at State Street Elementary School in Topeka, Kansas. She was very proud of achieving her Doctorate in Education. Phyllis' commitment to education was unwavering, and her sweet demeanor, calm nature, and motherly kindness left a profoundly positive impact on the countless lives she touched throughout her years in the classroom. It was in these formative years that she cultivated a love for teaching that would resonate in the hearts of her students long after they left her care.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Max Lopez, who was lovingly by her side at her passing. Also mourned by her are her son, Michael Lopez, and his wife, Tina, her granddaughters Rachel Silvers, and Peyten Lopez, her grandsons Ryan Blasdel, Danny Lopez, and Austin Hein, her five great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Phyllis cherished her family and enjoyed every moment spent with them. She had a passion for collecting angel figurines, each piece reflecting her sweet and gentle soul. Beyond her collectibles, Phyllis enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Chad Lopez, and found excitement in exploring the world together. She had a keen interest in politics, kept herself updated on current events, and loved playing the organ. One could often find Phyllis admiring beautiful stained glass windows, enchanted by their intricate designs. And on special occasions, she would savor her favorite strawberry margarita from Rudy's Mexican Restaurant, cherishing the simple yet delightful moments life had to offer.
In addition to her role as a loving wife and mother, Phyllis embodied grace in all aspects of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Louise (Schulte) Hageman, and her daughter, Michelle Blasdel, who together with her husband, Chad, now watch over her with love.
A visitation will be held on May 19, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. She will be interred at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, with the interment service taking place after Mass.
Phyllis Lopez leaves behind not just memories but an enduring legacy of compassion, wisdom, and love.
