Norma Jean Ott, 93, beloved mother, nana, aunt, sister, and friend passed away while surrounded by family on January 19th. Born on January 28, 1928 to Thomas Vassel and Helen Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Jean, as she was known by her family was the 6th of 11 children and grew up on a dairy farm. After attending Fern Creek High School, Jean worked for the FBI in Louisville as a stenographer. She married Norman Edward Ott on October 5, 1957 and they welcomed 5 children, finally settling in Kansas City, Missouri.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents; husband Norman; sisters Betty Bentley, Demetria Downs; brothers Billy, Keith, Paul, and Morrison Downs. She is survived by sisters Carol Logsdon and Deborah Hauss (Ronn); brothers John Donald Downs (Lavinia) and James Downs (Fran); sister-in-law Anne Downs. She is also survived by 5 children Rebecca Donnelli (Rick), Ellen Ott (Jon Gundersen), Margaret Ott, Kenneth Ott and Jeanne Burnett (Dave); 12 grandchildren Jessica Godwin (Aaron), Emily Mainzer (Greg), Ben Donnelli, Hannah Welchel (Anthony), Riise Gundersen, Iris Gundersen, Josie Gundersen, Christopher Smith, Meghan Neitzel (James), Isabel Burnett, Josh Burnett, Ethan Burnett and 3 great grandchildren Luke, Marina and Grace Mainzer.
Jean was an active member of St. Thomas More Parish in Kansas City, Missouri for more than 50 years. She was dedicated to the poor and vulnerable. Jean was a Eucharistic minister, member of Ladies of Charity and the St. Judes Club.
Jean walked her faith in God every day of her life. She embodied kindness, grace, and joy and her enduring light will be missed by her family and friends forever.
A Visitation will be held at St. Thomas More, 11822 Holmes Rd. Kansas City Missouri, on January 27, 2022 at 9:30-10:30 am. The Rosary will follow at 10:30 am, as well as a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
In Lieu of flowers send donations to Seton Center in Kansas City.
