Obituary

Michael J. “Mike” Regan, 86, of Fairway, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Mike was born on March 10, 1940, in Coffeyville, Kansas, to Martin and Helen (Welsh) Regan. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and proudly served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. While living in Kansas City, he met his wife of more than 55 years, Jan McBrien Regan. They were married on June 3, 1967, and together raised two daughters.

Mike enjoyed a successful career with Muzak, where he sold customized instrumental background music designed to enhance workplace productivity and create welcoming environments in businesses and public spaces.

Mike was heavily involved in Rotary Club 13 and for many years enjoyed selling newspapers on Kansas City Day to benefit the Kansas City Rotary Youth Camp Foundation.

An avid sports fan, Mike could strike up a conversation with anyone about nearly any sport. His favorite team, however, was always whoever happened to be playing the Kansas Jayhawks. As he often joked, it was a good day whenever the Hawks lost.

Mike was also a familiar sight in Fairway and Prairie Village, where he spent countless hours walking with his beloved dogs. If you lived in the area, chances are you crossed paths with him and one of his four-legged companions. For the last several years after 6:45 morning Mass, he would stop by VCA Fairway Animal Hospital to get an eye drop for his one-eyed pug, TJ. The eye drop only took a few seconds, but Mike and TJ would stay and visit with the VCA team as they showered them both with love and attention.

In keeping with his generous spirit and willingness to help others, Mike donated his body to science to advance medical education and research.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary; his wife, Jan; and numerous beloved dogs and cats who were part of the family through the years.

He is survived by his daughters, Kerry and Casey (Ken); grandchildren Nick, Greg, Molly, Jack, Luke, and Jake; great-grandson Wyatt; and pug TJ.

Mike's dry wit and sense of humor remained with him until the very end, keeping nurses and caregivers laughing even during his final days. His family extends heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at The Ashton on the Plaza and to the doctors, nurses and medical staff at St. Luke's Medical–Surgical ICU and St. Luke's Hospice House for their compassionate care and support.

To honor Mike’s memory, donations can be made to the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City (prckc.org), The Wounded Warrior Project (support.woundedwarriorproject.org), the Tunnels to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) or St. Luke’s Hospice House (saintlukeskc.org).

Honoring his wishes, no services will be held.

"I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith."
