Mike was born May 13, 1945 in Myrtleford, Victoria, Australia to Tony and Mary.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents Annie and Pat Mongan and William and Julia Pierce and
a sister, Maura Reid. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Riley Mongan; step-children, Heather Newby (Michele) and Patrick McQueen (Katie); six grandchildren Payton, Evie, Paige, Jack, Audrey and Vivian.; and his beloved sister, Sr. Frances Mongan.
Mike's schooling at St Mary's Primary School began when his mum was sharing her frustration about her mischievous son with a nun at church. Her answer was simple. "What that boy needs is school." So, at 4 years of age Mike's education began. He remembered being in a class of 50 students. But Sister Immaculata handled it well gliding it seemed and would appear magically by his desk. His education continued at Champagnot Wangaratta Boarding School. He was often homesick only allowed to visit home every 3 months. Mike ran away twice and w returned promptly by his mother. The second time he recalled he returned at lunch and the students all applauded him like he was a hero.
He went on to graduate from Melbourne University. He tried teaching school for a year but sitting in a classroom all day was not Mike. He volunteered for a year teaching in New Guinea. The students did all the cooking and mike remembered one night a gecko falling into the mashed potatoes. They scooped him out and continued dinner.
Mike then decided he needed to see some more of the world. He began at age 21 with India
meeting Indira Ghanhi . He continued exploring South America, Nepal, Everest Base camp, Alaska and the all the national parks. He managed to do some computer programming during this time also.
His greatest adventure began in 2001 when he met Marilyn. They were married June 16, 2004. They traveled the world and every day amazed each other. Four words described them .my one true love..Mike never dreamed he would have six grandchildrenand he believed they were all brilliant and beautiful. The greatest compliment he ever received was from Payton, when he said I Like Mike..hes silly like me. Mike and Memaws New Years Eve parties with grandchildren were joyfull events. They loved him he let the girls curl his hair and paint his nails. he helped Jack with whatever project he wantedthey built a volcano and scared Memaw.and delighted the kids.
Mike loved his patron saint Joseph. He loved his friends. Park and Ken and Mike could solve any condo problem. His condo friends were so special to himAnita was the best cook. His cousins in Oz were so special to him. Many thanks to Robin and Dale [Mikes buddy]. Thanks to Linda and Donna and Janice. Colin McCormac, a friend since childhood, was much loved. Til we all meet again. What a glorious reunion that will be.
