Michael Winfield Jones, 75, passed away unexpectedly on January 30, 2021 from complications related to treatment of a recent cancer diagnosis. Mass of Christian Burial will held at St. Peters Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mike was born on February 17, 1945 at the Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas to Charles H. Jones and Marymae (Sharon) Jones. At a young age, Mike's family moved to Kansas City where he lived for the rest of his life. He graduated from Southeast High School in 1963, then Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1968.
Mike and Nora (Powers) were married on May 1, 1971 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Kansas City, MO. They raised two daughters, Katie and Molly, whom he adored. Mike began a 25+ year career with the Head Start Program in the KCMO School District. In 1975 he received his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He spent several years away from Education in various jobs in the late 1990's. He returned to Education in 2004 and spent 10 years in the Shawnee Mission School District until his retirement.
Mike was an avid sports fan, and in particular a baseball junkie. He played at KCMO 3&2, coached by his father Charlie, and loved to tell stories about their days together on the diamond. He loved cheering for the Royals and Chiefs. Known as "Paw" to his four grandchildren, he spent his retirement tirelessly following their ballgames and other exploits. He and Nora have been parishioners of St. Peter's Catholic Church for over 45 years, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered at St. Peter's Early Childhood Learning Center.
Mike is survived by Nora, his wife of nearly 50 years, his daughter Katie Roder and her husband Brian of Kansas City, MO, his daughter Molly Westphal and her husband Jason of West Fargo, ND, his grandchildren Charlie and Marykate Roder and Zachary and Brady Westphal, his brother Bob and wife Karen of Roeland Park, KS, several beloved nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He is also survived by his cousin and lifelong friend, Jim Pettit of St. Louis, MO.
Paw will be terribly missed. He was a loyal, faithful, humble, and unassuming rock of our family. We would like to thank Dr. Carney Nulton and his staff, and the many doctors and nurses at KU Medical Center for their loving care of our Husband, Dad, Grandfather, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Peters ECLC (Preschool), 6400 Charlotte Street, Kansas City, MO 64131.
