Maxine Joy Darr Liebst died 8 days shy of her 91st birthday on August 19, 2021, in Shawnee, Kansas after a long illness. Maxine was born on August 27, 1930, to Frank and Leona Darr, in Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1948.
After high school, Maxine began working at the Rudy Patrick Seed Company in the West Bottoms, where she met her boss and future husband, Robert "Bob" Liebst. They were married on October 21, 1951, in Kansas City, Missouri. Maxine and Bob raised their children in Kansas City, Missouri until they moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 1965. Maxine was a homemaker and helped to take care of her grandchildren. At the age of 70, Maxine began working in the cafeteria of Rhein Benninghoven Elementary School for many years. Maxine was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Shawnee, Kansas and took care of many infants in their church nursery.
Maxine was a genuinely sweet person. She was famous for her crocheted baby blankets and Christmas stockings, which she always had extras on-hand to give away as gifts. Maxine lived for her grandchildren. She attended every school and sporting event. Maxine was a blessing to all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her son Roger Liebst (Anne), daughter Kathy Hudon (Phil), and her grandchildren Michele Sherrell, Bill Smith, Kelley Liebst, Claudia Hudon, Zach Hudon, and Madie Hudon, her great-grandchildren, Kylie, Kathryn, AJ and Joshua, and many nieces and nephews. Her great-great grandchild is expected at the end of the year. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Bob Liebst, her daughter, Ruth Smith, her son-in-law Jim Smith, her parents, her sisters Pauline Darr and Shirley Basham, and her brother Francis "Lee" Darr. Her beloved cats, Rachel and Sarah, were also eagerly waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021, at the Muehlebach Chapel, burial at Forest Hills Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the Chapel.
