Our precious mother, Mary Margaret Hugunin, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022. Affectionately, known as "Mom", "GIGI" and "Grandma", she was 81.
Mary was born on August 5, 1940 to William and Teresa Vanatta (Fasl) in Kansas City, Missouri. Mary graduated from Loretta High School. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother Bill Vanatta, his wife Debbie and their children Natalie and Lindsay . Mary joyfully remembered all the long camping vacations across the country she took with her family and their Prairie Schooner camping box tied to the top of the car.
Mary was joined in marriage on January 14, 1967 to Gary Hugunin, her lifelong loving partner. Gary preceded her in death in 2017 months after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mary ran a baby-sitting service from her home for many years. Mary also spent 10 years with the Unity School of Christianity in the 1990s.
Mary was mother to Gary, Chris, Tracey, Eric and Jennifer. She raised her children with love and devotion and was a happy and devoted homemaker for most of her life.
Mary found joy in quilting, crocheting, sewing, needle point, and reading. Many family members and friends have either a quilt, handmade Christmas stocking, or various other crafts from Mom. Mary loved decorating the home for various seasons and special events through the year. Many of the decorations were handmade and designed for Easter, St. Patricks Day, 4th of July, and Christmas in particular.
Mary was devoted to the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. Mary volunteered in service to the St. Joseph Guild at St. Bernadettes Catholic Church for many years.
Mary is survived by her children Chris (Christy), Tracey (Alexandria), Eric, and Jennifer (Justin Leffler). Her grandchildren include Myranda Hugunin (Fianc Cody Burton), Colin Hugunin, Addison Hugunin, Brock Leffler, Nora Leffler, and Abby Herrell. She was preceded in death by her oldest son Gary Hugunin, Junior.
Services will be held on Monday, May 23, 2022 at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church 8941 James A Reed Rd, Kansas City, MO 64138. A visitation is scheduled at 9 am. Mass will follow at 10 am.
Mary will be buried alongside Gary. at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery 20109 Bus, MO-13, Higginsville, MO 64037. Burial services will start at 12 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64145 can be made in Marys name or by going to their website kchospice.org.
