Liz was born March 13, 1928 in Jefferson City, MO to Victor and Pauline Hopen. Liz is survived by her children Kathleen Heydon, Patty Freemyer (Jim), Michael Walsh (Danise), Susan Manfredi (Mike), Noreen Walsh, Kevin Walsh (Sharon) and Tim Walsh; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and her sister, Rose Mary Bond. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, her parents, stepmother Rose Ashby Hopen, brother Robert Ashby, and son-in-law Mike Heydon.
Liz was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was known as GG (great-grandma) to her 16 great grandchildren.Known as Mary Lee to many from her youth, she attended Lillis HS and Mount St Scholastica College. She worked at Bell Telephone Company after marriage. Liz was told by doctors she might never have children. Over the course of the next 13 years, she gave birth to her "Magnificent 7". She was active in her community as a Girl Scout leader, Election Judge for 30 years and KC Zoo docent for 30 years. She shared her love of nature by traveling to schools on the Zoo mobile and volunteering for Zoo school summer camps.Liz was devoted to her faith community at St Catherines parish. She was a Liturgical minister, member of the Altar and Rosary Society, worked long hours in the food pantry, and tended to the Church garden. She could always be counted on to volunteer for funeral meals and fund-raising events.
Her energy was boundless both for her community but especially family and friends whether the task was caring for loved ones near the end of life or orchestrating elaborate birthday dinners (repeatedly). She and Tom loved to party with friends and family and especially loved the opportunity to travel enjoying adventures in different countries and visiting far flung family members. She loved a good time and enjoyed life. Her strength and support to her family, friends, and faith community will be sorely missed as she remains in our hearts and memories.
