It is with joyful sadness that we give back to our God the gift of Mary Brashear. She is now returned to her Lord, joined by her loving family and friends that preceded her and enriched her life. Mary was born to Alva and Grace Gauss in Centerview, MO. She, and her 2 brothers Harry, now deceased and Bill lived through the times of Depression and War becoming strong both in faith and fortitude to face lifes challenges. Mary was married to George Sharbel in 1948 and was graced with her two loving children, Joseph and Mary Grace. In 1971 she mourned her mothers passing and the death of her husband George. Courageously she undertook the completion of raising her family and embracing a new husband in 1973, Russel Brashear. In 1987 she laid Russel to rest.
Mary worked hard throughout her life, both as a wife, mom and longtime bookkeeper for CPA firms and then VanderKolk Interiors and finally with her longtime friend Sandy Humo in his decorating business. She cherished her work time even after her illness robbed her independence.
Mary moved into the Jeanne Jugan Center in 2010 where she was welcomed by the Sisters as a new resident in their community of faith. She, once again showed her social charms by engaging both residents and staff alike over coffee or a wave in the hall. Much gratitude goes to the Little Sisters for allowing Mary to flourish in ways that were grace-filled for all.
Mary leaves behind many who cared for her. Her children Fr. Joseph Sharbel and Mary Grace Sharbel and her husband Ivan Marquez. Her grandson, Dayne Sharbel-Phillips. She leaves her brother Bill Gauss of Lees Summit, MO. Her sister-in-law, Pat Sharbel. And her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who walked with her throughout her life. Mary was blessed by many friends in her life, most special Pat and Susan Rowland and Sandy Humo. Whenever you entered Marys life, you became her friend.
A wake and visitation will be held at the Jeanne Jugan Center, 8745 James A. Reed Rd., on Monday, August 6 with a prayer service at 2pm followed by a time of visitation until 4pm. Funeral will be on Tuesday, August 7, at St. Peters Catholic Church, 701 E. Meyer Blvd. A visitation there beginning at 9am with the funeral Mass at 10am. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Donations gratefully accepted for the work of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
