Mary Catherine 'Mary Kay' Vandenboom

Mary Kay VandenBoom, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to many, died peacefully in her Kansas City home on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the age of 91.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 5:30 PM on Monday, February 14th, at Saint Peters Church, 815 E Meyer Blvd, Kansas City, MO. Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 PM followed by a 4:30-5:30 PM visitation at Saint Peters Church.
Mary Kay was born January 7, 1931 in Kansas City, Missouri to Frank and Cathleen Purcell. She attended Notre Dame de Sion, graduated from Mount Saint Scholastica, and went on to attend Avila College. She met Eugene "Gene" VandenBoom, Jr. and they were married on December 30, 1950 at St. Elizabeths Church in Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1953, she, Gene, and their family joined St. Peters Parish where she served in many volunteer roles up until her death. Mary Kays dedication to her parish was of utmost importance to her. She was also a dedicated volunteer in various other roles such as, PTA President of St. Peters School where her four children attended, RHS Sale-O-Rama, Cub Scouts as Den Mother, Kaleidoscope Volunteer, Saint Peters Altar Society, Circle Prayer Group, Serra Club, and poll worker for local elections.
For 23 years, Mary Kay worked at Mercantile Bank (now U.S. Bank) at 63rd and Troost where she retired as Assistant Vice President/Customer Service.
Mary Kay was best known for her dedication to serving her community, her impeccable style, and her ability to make any stranger feel like a friend.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene Henry VandenBoom, Jr. on April 26, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Christine Stanton on March 7th, 2021, and her parents, Frank and Cathleen Purcell.
She is survived by her sons, Dr. Eugene (Gene) Henry VandenBoom III (Kathy) of Kansas City, Missouri, Francis (Frank) Purcell VandenBoom of Baltimore, Maryland, and James (Jim) Hugh VandenBoom of Kansas City, Missouri; her son-in-law, Mark Stanton of Liberty, Missouri; her grandchildren, Theresa Helms (Jesse) and Joseph VandenBoom; her great-grandchildren, Elias, Jonas, and Maeve Helms and Ary VandenBoom; her sister, Francis Borders (Ed-deceased); and her nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Mary Kay can be made to St. Peters Parish Endowment Fund.
