Much as she lived her life, Martha Mary (Lange) Hense passed with beauty and grace on December 11, 2022 — sent on her way with the love of her many friends and devoted family.

Martha was born on February 26, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended St. Therese Little Flower Elementary School, followed by Bishop Hogan High School — where she became “Miss Hogan High” in 1947 — and finally, Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas. She received her Radiologic Technologist certificate from Research Hospital, and worked as an X-ray technician at the General Motors plant in Kansas City, Kansas. She later returned to radiology, working as a mammography technician at the University of Kansas Medical Center, in Kansas City, Kansas, for 16 years. She was a member of the Ladies of Charity and a regular volunteer at Seton Center.

In addition to her three boys and loving husband Ray, the many people who knew Martha and her welcoming home will recall her gracious hospitality, sublime cooking, and radiant warmth. To know her was to know the comfort of a true friend in times of need; a mother of pure, nurturing love, and a beautiful wife of unwavering devotion. In addition to the countless, dedicated hours spent scorekeeping at her sons’ baseball games, or volunteering at Rockhurst High School’s “Sale-O-Rama,” many will recall the work closest to her heart: commanding the kitchen and spoiling fortunate visitors with recipes that never failed to leave a smile, only to be followed by the sweet taste of her chocolate chip cookies and other baked wonders.

The warmth of Martha’s home was fueled by her devotion as a lifelong Catholic. Her special reverence for Saint Padre Pio was always a source of strength and comfort.

Martha will be missed the most by those who loved and knew her the best, including beloved husband, Raymond L. Hense; sons, Gary R. Hense (Rita), Kansas City, Missouri, Mark J. Hense (Kelly), Village of Loch Lloyd, Missouri, Jim A. Hense (Renée), Los Angeles, California; grandchildren, Kristen, Scott, Stephanie, Julia, Laura, Mary Kate, Eleanor, and Anton; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Anastasia Kornis. Martha is preceded in death by her father, Anton Lange; mother, Cathryn Lange; and sister, Jeanne Louise Loosen.

The rosary will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20th at St. Thomas More Church, 11822 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, Missouri, folllowed by visitation and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. and a reception in the church basement. Entombment at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to St. Thomas More Church or Seton Center.
