Lois C. Ernst

February 1, 1926 — April 5, 2022

Lois C. (Halbig) Ernst, 96, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at home with the loving support of her children. She was preceded in death, in 1978, by her husband Bernard L. Ernst. She was the sixth, and last surviving child of Frank J. and Caroline (Trecker) Halbig, of Carroll, Iowa. A mother of eight, grandmother to seventeen, and great-grandmother to six, Lois was committed to family, and to continuing the work she and Bernard had started together. But she was also a champion of underdogs, strivers, and policies for the common good.
Intensely hard-working and resilient, Lois was, in turn: a med-tech, COO/CFO of the Ernst household, life-long political campaigner, teacher in the KCPSD, 30-year volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, and decades-long volunteer at the SFX Food Pantry. Lois was both fiercely independent and a loyal and trusted friend. She was a proud graduate of Mount St. Scholastica College, where she met many of the clever, independent women who became those loyal and trusted friends, and she theirs.
Lois is survived by her children Chris (Bill) Taft, Lou (Marilyn) Ernst, Paul (Lori) Ernst, Matt (Cathy) Ernst, Tom (Stacy) Ernst, Mary (Charlie) Murphy, Monica Ernst, Fred (Linda) Ernst; grandchildren David (Katie Schoeneck) Bradbury, Caroline (Mike) Koplowitz, Katrina Ernst, Al Ernst, Alisha (Marc) Bowser, Erik (Ali Pereira) Ernst, Brian Ernst, Lauren (David) Rurik, Jake Ernst, Max (Maggie Cofer) Ernst, Joe Ernst, Bobby (Rebecca Kumar) Murphy, Sarah Murphy, Chris Schreiber, Claire (Mariah Yagow) Schreiber, Addie Ernst, Liam Ernst; and great-grandchildren Eleanor and Dean Koplowitz, Parker and Kennedy Bowser, Reed and Kai Rurik.
Visitation will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1001 E. 52nd St., Kansas City, Missouri, 64110 at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, with a Mass following at noon.
