Lanny Herbert Ross, 85, Leawood, Kansas, died peacefully surrounded by his family on August 29, 2026. Lanny was born June 3, 1941, in northwest, Arkansas, to Herbert and Ruth Schell Ross and was raised on their farm in Labette County, Kansas.

He studied computer science at Devry University in Chicago and East Texas State University where he developed a lifelong passion and career working with computer systems.

Lanny married Genell Smothers and they settled in Kansas City where they lovingly raised their daughters, Lisa and Stacey. He leaves behind a legacy of love for his family - his family filled his heart with joy.

He is survived by his wife Genell, daughter Lisa Wetzler, (David), grandchildren Audrey Kirk (Owen), Lauren Jansma (Derek), Austin Goh (Katie), Sam Wetzler, and Sophie Pennipede (Dante). He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Miles and Crosby Kirk; Linden, Winslowe, and Halsten Jansma; Lucy Goh; and Nicholas Pennipede. He is also survived by his brother Joe Ross (Tommie) and nephews and niece David, Dan, Tim and Joni Smothers.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Stacey Ross, his parents, and his sister Norma.

A private celebration of life with take place at a later date. The family suggests donations to Kansas City Hospice House.
