Joseph Morrissey

Joseph Patrick Morrissey, 75, of Lees Summit, MO passed away peacefully on October 9, 2019 with his family by his side. Visitation will be Thursday, October 17th, 6-8 pm at Our Lady of the Presentation, 130 NW Murray Rd, Lees Summit, MO with a brief prayer at 6 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, October 18th, at 10 am. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Joseph Patrick Morrissey was born on January 20, 1944 to parents Charley Morrissey and Lois (Klingbiel) Morrissey, the eleventh of thirteen children. Born and raised in Carroll, Iowa, Joe started his career with J.C. Penney & Co. in 1963, quickly combining a gift for retail merchandising, a love of people, and a passion for hard work into a career that would last his professional life.
Joe married the love his life, Kay (Travis) Morrissey on December 28, 1967 at St. Marys Church in Hamburg, Iowa. Joe and Kay were married for 51 years and raised six children, traveling across the country and as far as Ireland in the summer of 2018.
Having held several management positions with J.C. Penney and living in multiple Midwestern states, Joe retired in 1991. He transferred his faith, love of people, and desire to serve into multiple volunteer pursuits including Meals on Wheels and the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. His tireless efforts to help and serve others were recognized as he was named a recipient of the Iowa Governors award for volunteer service, a fact that he would never have told you himself.
Joe and Kay retired to Lees Summit, MO in 2011 and became active members and volunteers at Our Lady of the Presentation Parish. He passed away quietly in his sleep on October 9th, 2019 with family members at his side. Faith and family were his priorities, humility and kindness his primary virtues.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Lois Morrissey, his brothers Fr. Charles Morrissey OMI and Malachy Morrissey, his sisters Monica Coble and Sr. Genevieve Morrissey FSPA, and his brother- in-law Melvin Spence.
He is survived by his wife Kay Morrissey and his sisters Lois Rita (Morrissey) Spence, Sr. Frances Morrissey FSPA, Sr. Mary Morrissey FSPA, Sr. Shirley Morrissey FSPA, Veronica (Richard) Heun, and sister-in-law Beverly Morrissey. He is survived by brothers Michael (Jean) Morrissey, Steve (Mary) Morrissey, and Thomas (JoAnn) Morrissey, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe is also survived by his six children and their families; Patrick & Alexandra Morrissey, Kevin & Misty Morrissey, Ryan & Chrystal Morrissey, Kyle & Sarah Morrissey, Megan & Noah Calbert, Kara Morrissey, and 17 grandchildren.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of service, love, generosity, good humor, and gratitude. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to any of the following:
