John William Schmidt

August 30, 1954 — February 15, 2020

John W. Schmidt, 65, passed away February 15, 2020 following a sudden and severe illness. He was born August 30, 1954 in Kansas City, Missouri to James and Margaret Schmidt. John is survived by his son, Jake Schmidt and wife Hilary; daughter, Emily Schmidt; grandchildren, James and Evelyn Schmidt; a sister, Ann Mertes; brothers, Patrick, Michael and David Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A loving father and loyal friend, John was known to everyone as a man of faith and life-long lover of music. A devout Catholic he participated in music and worship across the Kansas City Metro Area, including St. Thomas More, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Therese, and Nativity where he was a member of the bible study. A talented musician, he will always be remembered for sharing his love for music through the guitar, piano and song. In addition to playing solo shows around town, he also played with local folk music group, the Potlickers Possum Run Band.
John was also known for his love of his hometown of Kansas City and tremendously enjoyed following the Chiefs and the Royals, and other local sports teams. He volunteered as a baseball coach for the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy.
John earned a Bachelors degree from Rockhurst College and a Masters from the University of Iowa. He became a public servant, working for the state of Missouri as a social worker, then as a certified urban planner for communities across Kansas and Missouri, including Topeka, Johnson County, Peculiar and St. Joseph.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Music 4 Jeremys Cherubs, a local charity that refurbishes musical instruments and donates them to those in need. They also provide scholarships for local high school and college students, a mission of instilling a love of music in the hearts of young people that would very much resonate with John. Donations can be made at the service on Friday, February 21 at St. Thomas More Church or can be sent in care of Muehlebach Funeral Care, 6800 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO 64131.
