John W. Carl

February 7, 1932 — November 6, 2017

John William Carl, known to many as "Grandpa", passed away November 6, 2017 at the age of 85. Visitation for family and friends of the deceased will begin at 1:00 P.M. on November 10, 2017 at Muehlebach Funeral Home, located at 6800 Troost Ave, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 P.M, followed by a procession across the street to Calvary Cemetery where he will then be laid to rest. John was born on February 7, 1932 in Blue Springs, Missouri to Walter and Etta Carl. He began his life working on the farm, but after his father passed away, the family was forced to move to Independence, Missouri in order to find work. In school he enjoyed history and geography and would bring his text books home to read them for fun when he wasnt in ROTC. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1950. As a teenager, he worked at the local mattress factory helping with janitorial duties. At the start of the Korean War, in 1951, John enlisted in the United States Navy where he was assigned to the USS Frank Knox after completing three weeks of boot camp in San Diego, California. He went overseas three times working as a mechanists mate in the engine room. These were very hard times, as he was working in the heat, taking care of the machinery and watching the gauges that controlled the destroyers speed. After he was honorably discharged, he returned home to the Kansas City area where he then began work as a lab technician at what was then called Bendix, but is currently known as Honeywell. He would go on to work there for thirty-four years, testing all sorts of materials for their dependability. During this time, he had two daughters with Kathy Carl, creating a home and a way of life for his family. In his later years, John became a central part of many of his grandchildrens lives, letting his love and compassion shine through and truly "spoiling" them. He showed a great amount of love and self-sacrifice for his family by giving up his home, his health and his sanity in order to keep them happy and healthy when they needed it. He shared his warmth and humor into his final days, leaving smiles on his familys faces when their sorrows had overcome them. Survivors include the mother of his children, Kathy Carl; his daughters, Michelle Carl-Lajeunesse and Amy Carl; 6 grandchildren, Mary E. Lajeunesse, Michael J. Lajeunesse, Brianna N. Carl, Joseph T. Carl, as well as Meredith Scherer and Mallory Scherer. He is also a great grandfather to Luke W. Hobbs, whose middle name comes from John in Marys adoration of her grandfather. John was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margaret and Betty. The family would like to share their continued love and adoration for Grandpa as he will always be in their thoughts and prayers.
