John A. Fulton

April 2, 1928 — September 8, 2022

John Fulton of Brookside, Kansas City, MO, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 94 years old. John was born on April 2, 1928 and raised at the St. Anthony’s Home for Infants and Kansas City Boy’s Orphan Home School. John made his way into the world largely on his own and never met a stranger. He enjoyed getting to know others.

John married the love of his life, Mary Margaret (Shoen) Fulton on October 2, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2001. John was a successful long-time chef serving the former St. Mary's Hospital and private catering business. In 1996, the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association awarded him their Kitchen Manager of the Year. His love for cooking and baking continued throughout his life, often making cookies or cheesecake for the church, monthly senior luncheons, his friends and neighbors.

For a man who never had a driver's license, John loved to travel around the United States and abroad. His travels took him to Israel, Spain, Ireland, Thailand, Australia, Germany, Portugal and Russia amongst other places. He continued to travel well into his 80s. In retirement, he would often hop on the bus early in the morning, travel around to explore his hometown, and return in the evening after a day of adventures.

John was a faithful Catholic who attended Mass regularly. He loved his home, his Brookside neighborhood, and especially his block between Oak and Grand. He was known to his neighbors as "The Mayor of 67th Street". He knew everyone on the block and was thrilled when we all got together at block parties.

John was very appreciative for the care provided to him over the years by his "subjects" on 67th Street, the excellent staff at Ascension Living St. Joseph's in Overland Park, and the nursing and volunteer staff of Catholic Community Health Hospice.

Per John's wishes, his mortal remains were donated to KU for medical research. In John's memory, donations to Catholic Community Health Hospice are appreciated. Although John leaves no relatives, he will be dearly missed by his many friends and community.

Details regarding a memorial service for John will be added as soon as they are available.
