Joan Monaghan

Joan Monaghan, age 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 31st from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. at Muehlebach Funeral Care, 6800 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO 64131. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1st at St. Peters Catholic Church, 701 E. Meyer Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64131. Joan was born on May 26, 1937 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Bernard and Agnes (Eichholz) Lorenz. She was one of five children, having three brothers and one sister. Joan attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart all-girls high school in St. Joseph, MO where she was honored as homecoming queen. She would later go on to marry the linebacker from the Christian Brothers all-boys high-school next door. The high school sweethearts first met when Joan bumped into (knocked over) Ronald "Buck" Monaghan as they were ice skating on a friends pond. It was then that their love story of 61+ years began. Ron and Joans marriage brought forth the legacy of four wonderful children, eleven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.Joan was the life of any party and a true matriarch to her family. Family always came first - from her annual tea and pie-baking parties with her grandchildren to cheering on her children and grandchildren at sporting events. Joan was famous for her grand entrances and party dishes, always finding a way to liven up a bridge or domino game or keep her family and friends on their toes. She volunteered for over 25 years to Birthright of KC where she was able to pursue her lifelong calling of rocking and soothing babies. Joan was president of the PTA, a faithful member of St. Peters Parish for more than 50 years, and part of the Altar Society. Joan will be deeply missed and cherished by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Agnes; brothers, Jim and Tom Lorenz; daughter-in-law, Eva Monaghan; and father-and-mother-in-law, Arthur and Hazel Monaghan. Joan is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Ron Monaghan; son Michael Monaghan (Nancy); daughter Karen Haywood (Hans); son John Monaghan (Heidi); daughter Janet McDaniel (Brian); grandchildren Katie Lindgren (Joe), Sean and Marie Monaghan, Holly and Hannah Haywood, Broghan, Brynn, Braley and Brody Monaghan, and Sophia and Genevieve McDaniel; great-grandchildren Jim and Nina Lindgren; brother Robert Lorenz (Rita); sister Dorothy Stock (Doc); and sisters-in-law Dolores and Ruth Lorenz; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Birthright of Kansas City, 6309 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64113 or St. Peters Parish.
