James Glendenning Mason

September 5, 1927 — August 25, 2018

Jim Mason, 90, of Leawood, died August 25, 2018 with his wife of 69 years, Alyce Fawkes Mason, at his side.
Jim grew up in Lawrence, KS. After graduating high school in 1945 he enlisted in the Navy, serving both active and reserve duty. He attended the University of Kansas (BA, Journalism; MA, Psychology) where he was a member of Delta Upsilon and a photographer for the Daily Kansan. He met Alyce on the steps of the KU library and later sold his camera to buy her a ring. They married in 1949 and settled in Prairie Village where they raised two daughters and three Labrador retrievers.
Jims career in human resources included positions at General Motors, Menorah Hospital, and R.B. Jones Insurance, and culminated as Director of Personnel for Marion Laboratories from 1974 until his retirement in 1987. He was president of the Personnel Management Association in 1965-66.
A dedicated Jayhawk, Jim was a Life Member of the KU Alumni Association and past president of the Kansas City chapter; and a member of the Williams Education Fund and the Chancellors Club. He was an avid sports fan and longtime season ticket-holder of KU football and basketball, as well as the Chiefs. With Alyce, he hosted tailgate parties of renown. He also enjoyed past memberships in Leawood Country Club and Hallbrook Country Club; and Oxbow Farm and Patterson duck clubs.
Jim is survived by the love of his life "Sweet Alyce;" daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Jeff Morgan of Prairie Village and Suzanne and Ed Kerley of Leawood; and grandchildren Paige and Mason Kerley. A private graveside service will be held at Corinth Cemetery. An Open House celebrating Jims life will take place Saturday, September 8 at Hallbrook Country Club, 2 to 4. The family requests no flowers, and suggests donations to the Williams Education Fund or KU Endowment Association.
