James B. Mathis, died on Friday, May 4, 2018, at his home. He was born on August 10, 1946, in Clinton, Missouri, the son of the late Mary (Gardner) and Harry Mathis.He is survived by his sister Tracy Mathis, of St. Louis, his brother John Mathis of Columbia, niece Sarah (Ken) Siemens, and their children Mollie and Eric of St. Joseph, Missouri, nephew Andrew (Shari) Hamilton and their daughter Kate of Columbia, and niece Alex Mathis of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jo Ellen (Jody) Hamilton of Columbia and Rebecca J. Mathis of Columbia.Jim graduated from Mexico High School in Mexico, Missouri, in 1964, and from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri, in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam era. Jim clerked for Judge Sam Blair after college, then was a sales representative specializing in architectural millwork until his retirement in 2011. He later worked at Jay Wolfe Honda Jim was the ultimate gentleman, chivalrous to his core. He was bright, compassionate and sensitive, with a great sense of humor. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and Mizzou sports. A reception to honor Jims life will be held at the Club at Old Hawthorne, 6221 East Highway WW in Columbia, on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, from 5 to 7 p.m.In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to TRYPS Theatre Institute at Stephens College, 1200 East Broadway, Columbia, MO 65215, or Youth in Need, 1815 Boones Lick Road, St. Charles, MO 63301, or to the charity of the donors choice.
