Ida was born on January 13, 1912 in Sweet Springs, MO, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Otho Hardin Witcher. She attended CMSU and the University of Missouri, earning 3 degrees. She became a licensed Medical Technologist (M.T.) and started a laboratory at the Warrensburg Clinic, now the Johnson County (MO) Hospital, in the days when she counted blood cells under a microscope, made her own reagents, sharpened needles, and autoclaved syringes.
In 1937 she married Charles Stewart Dixon. They made their home in Kansas City, MO, bringing up two sons.
She liked to dance and taught exercise classes at age 75. Ida also enjoyed traveling and went all over the United States; Hawaii when it was a territory, Mexico, Canada, Europe, and South America. When Charles retired they took a long trip around the world. Ida visited Japan several times and was once entertained by the Princess Kitashirakawa in honor of a great aunt who had been a missionary to Japan and taught the daughters of the royal families.
Ida was a member of The Second Presbyterian Church, becoming a deacon and President of the Womens Fellowship. She was also a part of the Art Study Club of Kansas City, a charter and foundation member of the College Club of Kansas City, and volunteer with Barrett Circle of Crittenton Childrens Center and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Stewart; son, Charles Witcher Dixon; daughter-in-law, Dr. Anita Dixon; and sister, Wilma McGurren. She leaves her son, Dr. William Duffield Dixon; a daughter-in-law, Mary Eileen Dixon; two granddaughters, Dr. Kathryn Ness and husband Dr. Erik, Elizabeth Cannon and husband Michael; great grandchildren, Caroline and Kiersten Ness, Liam Cannon, Quinn and Claire Cannon; and six nieces and one nephew.
