Gloria Thompson

Fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Gloria Anne (Waris) Thompson, died peacefully on January 4, 2024.

She was born to William and Mary Agnes Waris on October 4, 1936, in St. Joseph, MO. Preceded in death by her husband, David Joseph Thompson in 1993, and brothers John and William. She is survived by four daughters, Anne (Jack) Ryan, Mary Ellen (Mark) Walton, Teresa (George) Muehlemann and Maureen (David) Blazevic, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, brothers the Reverend Gerald Waris and Richard and sister, Meg Huber.

Gloria attended the Convent in St. Joseph and Duchesne College in Omaha, NE. She then taught at The Cathedral grade school. Gloria and David married in 1957 after his graduation from the University of Notre Dame. They resided in St. Joseph until 1962 when they moved to Dubuque, IA. In 1967 they moved to Omaha where they raised their family. 

Gloria received a master’s degree in library science from Saint Mary’s College and served as the librarian at St. Robert Bellarmine school from 1981 until her retirement in 2003. She remained active in the parish and volunteered in the library of Sacred Heart grade school.

In 2014 she moved to Kansas City to be near her family.

Along with her family and many friends, Gloria enjoyed bridge, tennis, golf, travel, Notre Dame football and Creighton basketball. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her the most joy in her final years.

Visitation—Saturday, January 13, 2024, 9:30am, recitation of the Rosary, 10:30am followed by the funeral Mass at 11:00am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11800 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
