George was born on April 29, 1941 in Kansas City to John and Catherine Solomon. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Alice, children; Leslie Jakobe (Pat), Jodi Briggs (Paul), Jeff Solomon (Jennie) and grandchildren; Peter (Hannah), John, Michael (Logan), Brian (Deanna), Jenna (Cameron), Dan, Nate, Leanna, Caleb, Catherine and 5 great grandchildren; Madden, Gabe, Teddy Jo, Lucas, Bo and Jenna’s baby girl who will join us soon. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jack, and sister, JoAnn. He is survived by his brother, John Solomon (Laura Lee) and numerous Johnson and Solomon family nieces and nephews.
George served in the Missouri National Guard and Reserves until his medical discharge at which time he began his long career in the automotive industry and was well respected by his peers, employees and customers. He was an original partner in S&S Service Station, owned multiple gas stations, a salvage yard and spent many years as a Service Director at dealerships in the KC area. George was very involved in drag racing in the KC and surrounding areas, an inductee in the KCIR Hall of Fame, and made lifelong friendships. Even after he was unable to race, he supported his son and grandson at the track and in his final days was cheering them on through the dragstrip livestream of the race.
George was devoted to his family and embraced his role as Papa to not just his grandkids but their many friends. He and Mimi were in the bleachers at all sporting events cheering on the kids and passing out gold dollars to the young children to get treats at the concession stand. Sunday morning mass and trips to the Waffle House, Sunday dinners and wiffle ball games, and Chiefs Watch Party were required attendance for family and friends. To know Papa was to love him, he treated everyone like family and his mantra was, “there is nothing better than family”.
The family is grateful for the many people who supported, helped and prayed for George during his journey. Special appreciation and thanks to Mikayla and the wonderful ICU staff at St.Luke’s East, and Simone, Papa’s Personal Care Assistant and Connie, his Hospice Nurse, and all the Phoenix caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be in George’s name to Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church.
