Flora Lenz Mundy (Flo) passed away Tuesday, June 28th, 2022 at Sunrise of Lenexa. She was surrounded by all five of her living children, and a caregiver who lovingly referred to her as "Grandma." She died peacefully, as her family prayed together, which she so dearly loved.
Flora was born June 5th, 1930, in Augusta, GA, she was the daughter of William Daniel and Irene Race Lenz. The youngest of three children, she was always a Southerner at heart. In 1948, she moved to Kansas City, MO to attend the Saint Joseph School of Nursing, with the intention of becoming a nun with the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
That all changed when she met her future husband, Raymond J. (Bud) Mundy Jr. She was caring for Buds mother, Louvesta, who was a patient at the time. Bud flirtingly asked her to take his blood pressure, and she obliged. She always said she was smitten by his beautiful blue eyes. From that point forward, she knew she was never going to be a nun!
Flora and Bud married in August, 1952, they had six children over the next 12 years. They enjoyed almost 50 years of marriage before Buds death in 2002. Floras nursing career spanned 43 years. Her career included time at St Joseph Hospital and Baptist Hospital. Her entire nursing career she worked either evening or overnight shifts. She was the night supervisor at St Marys and then Trinity Lutheran Hospital when she retired in 1995.
Flora joined Saint Peters parish in 1957, when they purchased their first and only home. Flora was extremely active with the Parish. She attended daily mass after her retirement. She served as a Eucharistic Minister, taking communion to Highlands Nursing home, Research Hospital, and wherever else needed. She was active in the Altar Society, and took pride in helping with cleaning and ironing the altar cloths, and cleaning the church. She volunteered at Visiting Nurse Association and Research Medical Center, where she handled the lost and found and was affectionately known as "the bag lady."
Flora considered her calm demeanor as her strongest asset. Anyone who knew Flora knew this to be true. She was always a voice of calm in all situations. She demonstrated her strong Catholic Faith in the way she lived her life on a daily basis.
Flora is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Mundy, Jr. (Bud), and her oldest son John Mundy and two brothers, William Daniel Lenz Jr, (Bill), and John Francis Lenz (Jack).
Flora leaves behind her children, Diane Billing (Jonathan), Nancy Schroeder (Larry), Dan Mundy, Don Mundy (Barb), Michael Mundy and John Amick who she affectionately referred to as her honorary 5th son. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren Jackie Mundy Litvak, Lauren Mundy, Emily Billing, Andrew Billing, Lukas Schroeder, Timothy Schroeder, Amanda Schroeder, Joseph Schroeder, Zach Mundy and James Mundy. Three great grandchildren Charlotte, Harrison and Riley, and many nieces and nephews.
She was blessed and felt great joy to meet and spend time with all of her great grandchildren prior to her death.
