Elvira (Bebe) Ramirez, 85, of Kansas City Missouri passed away April 12, 2022. She was born the seventh of twelve children on March 25, 1937, in Kansas City, Kansas to Ramon & Antonia Ramirez. As the child of parents born in Mexico, her life experiences were bicultural. After attending Wyandotte High School Elvira entered the Religious Order of The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth as the former Sr. Ann Christine. She earned a bachelors degree in Elementary Education at St. Marys College in Leavenworth KS and completed a masters degree in Social Work at Denver University. Elvira was accepted for doctoral studies at the University of Kansas, completing numerous requirements.
Elviras career took her to California, Texas, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas, working in the areas of education and social work. Her best experiences were in customizing programs to meet the needs of the systemically neglected and vulnerable populations, advocating with communities to access needs. Elvira served on many boards, receiving multiple accolades for her efforts in this field. Elvira received the Jane Adams award for her social justice endeavors and served as vice-chairperson with the national council of La Raza in Washington, DC. She was also on the Kansas Commission on Civil Rights, served as a hearing officer on migrant affairs in Kansas, and as a board member of Legal Services. A significant amount of her migrant work was in the Garden City, KS and Kansas City, KS communities. Elvira was the Midwest representative to National Manpower Committee, appointed by the US Secretary of Labor. In her later life, Elvira dedicated countless hours toward helping children with disabling conditions and their families as the Coordinator of Kansas Services for Children with Special Health Care Needs at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In this role she managed clinic services for children with spina bifida, cleft lip and palate, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, and cystic fibrosis. Although retired in 2001, Elvira continued to advocate for family, friends, and those in need for as long as she was able. During her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, visiting her winter home in Harlingen, TX, and volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister at the University of KS Medical Center. She also managed to pick up the love of golf from her papa.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 2 E. 75th St., Kansas City, MO 64114. The Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 AM. with Mass of Christian Burial to start at 11:00 AM. Elvira will be interred at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery at 83rd & Quivira in Lenexa, KS.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, Ramon & Antonia; her siblings, Raul Ramirez, Raquel Ramirez, Ramon Ramirez, Octavio Ramirez, Alicia Grado, Carmen Mott and Ramon Ramirez, Jr. Elvira is survived by her dear friend, Rochelle Trigg of the home. She is also survived by four siblings, Rachel Segura, Shawnee, KS, John Ramirez, Overland Park, KS, Virginia Chambers, Shawnee, KS and Patricia Davis, Shawnee, KS; two Sisters-in-law, Anita Ramirez, Overland Park, KS and Barbara Ramirez, Topeka, KS; Brother-in-law, James Mott Sr., Shawnee, KS; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Carrie W. Lehr, MD and the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Andrew McKeon, MD and the Mayo Clinic and Kansas City Hospice House for their compassionate care for our beautiful sister, aunt, and friend.
