Dorothy was born on November 28, 1922, in Cherokee County, Kansas, to her parents Joseph and Gladys (Bramlette) Carlson. She was one of four children, having two sisters and one brotherall whom she loved dearly. Dorothy grew up in a rural farm community, where her family farmed for many generations. It was when she was 12 years old that she met her childhood sweetheart, Rudolph "Rudy" Saplata. When Dorothys family decided to purchase a new farm, it was Dorothy that influenced just which farm they should buy... The one across the street from Rudy Saplata. And many years later53 happily married yearsone can say the rest is history.
Dorothy was an avid fan of the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. She also loved gardening, reading, and birds. Dorothy was a very devoted Catholic, keeping strong in her faith and living a life to exemplify her Catholic values throughout her entire 96 years. Every relationship Dorothy had was a meaningful one; She kept close with friends from high school for decades, along with neighbors whom she loved. It spoke volumes about the type of loyal and kind woman she was to have kept such life-long friendships with so many people. Dorothys sweet (and sassy) demeanor, kind heart, gentle soul, and loving way, will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Rudy Saplata; her parents Joe and Gladys Carlson; sister Lucille Warner; and grandson Jacob Boyd. Dorothy is survived by her son Dick Saplata and wife Anne; daughters Elaine Leander and husband John, Jean Brodie and husband Al, and Mary Jo Boyd and husband Tim; sister Gwenith Blake; brother Jim Carlson and wife Marlene; grandchildren Lisa Cowdrey (Jeff), Gretchen Burke (Matthew), Kevin Burak (Amanda), Eric Brodie, Margaret Fuss (Shawn), and Liz Boyd; stepgranddaughter Barbara Poole (Danny); five beloved great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and many dear nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions go to the Bishop Sullivan Center, 6435 Truman Rd., Kansas City, MO 64126, an organization that Dorothy was passionate about supporting.
