Doris J. Whitton

September 25, 1932 — January 23, 2023

Doris Jeanne Whitton passed away on Monday, January 23, 2023, at the age of 90. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, on September 25, 1932, to Russell and Jewell Butler. She grew up in Jefferson City and met the love of her life, Rex M. Whitton Jr., in high school. They were married for 64 years until Rex passed away in 2017. They were best friends and devoted companions and lived a life full of joy and happiness.

Doris never met a stranger. She truly enjoyed chatting with everyone, from the clerk in her favorite store, Talbots, to her many lifelong friends. She impressed upon her children the importance of being kind above all else. Doris was a fervent Mizzou fan and spent many years going to football games with family and friends—relishing every minute of elaborate tailgates and the opportunity to see her kids in college. Doris also loved to travel, read novels, play bridge, quilt, decorate her home, go to church, go shopping, and research family genealogy. And she especially loved to start collections: seashells, Christmas ornaments, antique shaving mugs, Battersea boxes, pressed glass, Anri figurines, pottery, Winnie the Pooh memorabilia, and many other treasures.

Doris was a loving friend, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her grandson Spencer Weedman and brother, Donald Butler. She leaves behind her three children, Rex M. Whitton III (Joanna), Julie Whitton Weedman (Chuck), Katie Whitton Finkle (Greg); six grandchildren, Rex M. Whitton IV, Ryan Whitton (Alexandra), Ross Whitton, Callie Troutman (Joshua), Claire Finkle, and Meredith Weedman; and one great-grandchild, Eden Troutman.

The family will have a private memorial service and suggests memorial contributions be made to the University of Missouri, Rex M Whitton scholarship c/o Muehlebach Funeral Care 6800 Troost Ave. Kansas City, MO 64131.
