Donald (Don) Edward Ahnen passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on March 15, 2021 while in hospice at Brookdale Senior Living in Overland Park, Kansas.
Don was born on September 22, 1930 in Oconto, Wisconsin to Nick and Clara Ahnen. He was part of a large family9th out of 11 brothers and sistersand grew up on a farm in a loving family. After high school, Don was drafted into the US Army and served his country stationed in Japan during the Korean War, where he repaired medical equipment and played baseball. While serving overseas, Dons good friend invited him to come back to Kansas City after the war. It is in Kansas City that Don met the love of his life, Rosemary Jones, and they were married on March 2, 1957.
Don began his career in the printing industry and saw it advance over his lifetime in ways he could have never imagined when he was starting out. He ran several companies, the most recent of which was a pre-press company he helped start and ran until he retired just 2 years ago. He proudly worked with and employed dozens upon dozens of skilled and dedicated artisans who were all known for the excellent product and services they offered to their customers.
While his career was a source of great satisfaction, it was his family that truly brought Don the most joy in his life. After tragically losing their first son, David Edward, to sudden infant death syndrome, he and Rosemary welcomed their three wonderful children, Janice Marie, Mark Edward, and Stephen Michael into their lives. Don was incredibly proud of each of his children for their own accomplishments, but most importantly for the lives they created with their own families. His daughter, Jan, and her husband, Jim Simpson, moved to a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah; his son Mark remained in Kansas City and worked with Don at Graphics Four for 34 years; and his youngest son, Steve, and his wife, Kim, moved to the Washington, DC area and then on to New Hampshire.
He was a loving husband, devoted father and proud grandfather to his 7 grandchildren (Katie and Michael Simpson, and his wife, Kellie; Courtney and Conner Ahnen; David, Matthew and Catherine Ahnen). Nothing brought Don more joy than when everyone gathered in Kansas City for a holiday, summer outing or just a casual get together, which usually meant lots of laughter and no doubt some barbeque for dinner from one of his favorite Kansas City restaurants.
