Dean Paul Dyer, 88 of Overland Park, KS passed away April 2, 2022. There will be a Memorial Service at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64115, on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 1:00.
Dean Dyer was born in Clearwater, Kansas to Audrey and Bessie (McMillen) Dyer. He was raised on a farm and attended country schools through seventh grade and graduated from Clearwater High School in 1951. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Agronomy. He was a member of the K-State marching band and concert band.
He received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force through the ROTC program and entered active duty in 1955. After completing USAF pilot training, he completed USAF navigator training and then served as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command at Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka, KS flying the RB-47. During his service time at Forbes, he completed dental school requirements by attending night school at Washburn University.
In 1960, Dean entered UMKC Dental School and joined the local active Air Force Reserve Unit at Richards Gebaur Air Force Base, Kansas City, MO flying the C-199. Between his freshman and sophomore year of dental school he was placed on active duty to attend the C-124 training school at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. The Berlin crisis occurred in 1961 and his reserve unit was placed on active duty for one year in case there was a need to fly a second Berlin air lift.
Dean returned to UMKC Dental School and graduated in 1965, then entered the UMKC Orthodontic residency program and graduated in 1967. Dean was in private practice in Prairie Village, KS and Overland Park, KS. He retired in 2004. He instructed part-time for 14 years on the Orthodontic faculty at UMKC.
Dean was an active member and office holder of numerous dental and orthodontic organizations including Past President of: The 54th District Dental Society (Kansas), Greater Kansas City Society of Orthodontists, Kansas State Association of Orthodontists, The Tweed Study Club of the Midwest, Rho Chapter, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, The Kansas Dental Association, The Southwestern Society of Orthodontists and The University of Missouri at Kansas City Orthodontic Alumni Association.
He presented papers and lectured in the United States and London.
Dean loved Orthodontics, photography, stamp and coin collecting, and music as well as working on the family wheat farm. The only two colors on Deans farm were John Deere green and yellow. He loved the ground as well as playing golf.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darrel Dyer. He is survived by his sister Phyllis Staats (Herschel); brother, Don Dyer. He is survived by: his wife, Sue and two children from a previous marriage to Barbara Hunter; son, Dave (JoEllen) Dyer; daughter Diane Dyer-Chenoweth, DDS (Jerry); his grandchildren: Jordan Dyer, Andrew Dyer, Davis Dyer and Jeremy Chenoweth; his step children: Kathleen (Kent) Willnauer, Laura Ryan, Wes Ryan (Carol); step grandchildren: Craig Barnett (Rachel), Kody Willnauer (Brittany), Kasey Willnauer (Cassie), Haley Ryan and Jack Ryan and step great grandchildren: Kohl Willnauer, Karaline Willnauer, Ezra Willnauer and Ellie Willnauer.
