David Miller

September 23, 1938 — April 9, 2021

David D. Miller, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on April 9, 2021. Recitation of the Rosary will be prayed at 10:15 am at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 71st and Metcalf, on Friday, April 23. Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Benedictine Abbey at 1020 N. 2nd Street, Atchison, Kansas, 66002.
Dave was born on September 23, 1938, in Dodge City, Kansas. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School, which was just across the street from his home, where he lived with his parents, Walter and Kathleen, his brother Jerry and sister Mary. He graduated from St. Mary of the Plains High School in 1956 and began his college career at St. Benedicts College in Atchison, Kansas. Dave then went on to the University of Kansas, where he received both his MBA and law degree. While in law school, Dave married the love of his life, Mary Pat, and devoted himself to her for 58 years. She passed away just one month prior to him and was there to greet him as he left this world and entered into eternal life. It surprised no one that he was anxious to join his bride. Together, Dave and Mary Pat raised three children and lived in the same house for over 51 years. It is accurate to say stability was Daves middle name.
Daves first and only employer was United Missouri Bank where he worked from 1965 until he retired in 2001 as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel. His 36 years there provided him the opportunity to establish his reputation as a trusted advisor to many, including Crosby Kemper, Jr., Bess Truman, and Thomas Hart Benton. To say that he was respected at UMB is an understatement. Many people looked to him for measured and competent advice and recall, to this day, his high integrity. Dave was small in stature, but he was a giant of a man.
Anyone who knew him, knew that above all, his Catholic faith and his family were most important to him. Never a day passed that his wife or family questioned his steadfast love or the love of God our Father. He had a true servants heart, and his gentle nature provided a soothing presence in the Miller home. His love of knowledge and the learning process was evident. The value he placed on education was known to his children and grandchildren, and he delighted in hearing about school decisions as well as career paths. He was simply interested in life and in always learning more, no matter his age. He loved to travel, experience new things, and his natural curiosity lives in all he left behind. Dave is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (husband Tracy), and two sons; John (wife Karen) and Patrick (wife Liz), 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, his sister, Mary Pepin, and her three children. Our hearts are heavy, but we say to our Father, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

"Its only when you grow up and step back from himor leave him for your own
Homeits only then that you can measure his greatness and fully appreciate it."

Margaret Truman.
