Charlotte Humphrey died on May 7 of general old age. At her side were her five favorite children: Christine, James, Thomas, Elizabeth and Mary. John was there but he was on his computer. James was absent during the actual passing because he could never hold still and left to run errands.
Charlotte Louise Rogers Humphrey was born in Chillicothe, MO on January 14, 1933, to Odell Shigouri Rogers and George Fox Rogers. She graduated from Lillis High School and Swift Secretarial School in Kansas City, worked at Swift & Henry Commission Firm and later at Westinghouse Electric Company. She married James W. Humphrey, Jr., Esq., on September 7, 1957, and they had six children: Christine (Dr. Joseph Myers, Leawood), James (Gigi, Leawood), John (Leslie, Kansas City), Thomas (Kansas City), Elizabeth (James Graham, Houston, TX), and Mary (Carl Krienen, Wilmington, Delaware), and their beloved adopted sister, Phyllis Gurera. Charlotte is preceded in death by Jim, her husband of 61 years, and her sisters Dolores Oldham and Jan Spallo.
Charlotte spent most of married life in south Kansas City as an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish. She loved the Church, the church community, and devoted countless hours to charitable organizations thus impacting the lives of newborns, their mothers, the homeless, the hungry, pregnant unwed mothers, the poor, and anyone who crossed her path in need. She spoke her mind for what she believed and was often criticized for doing so. Rather than brag about her generous heart and spirit, she would wave the “Char hand” and utter “Blah, blah, blah..”
Mrs. Humphrey tried tennis, golf, bowling but found that sports were not her calling. Quilting and bridge group afforded her warm friendships although not much quilting was done by Charlotte. Her greatest joys were when her grown children disclosed their antics as youngsters. She also cherished family gatherings particularly when her 15 grandchildren told her they loved her. Charlotte was also blessed with one great grandson, Ward Buchanan. The family is deeply appreciative of the caregivers at St. Anthony’s Senior Living Center, who tended to Charlotte with endless love, patience, and compassion.
