Charles J. Schuler

March 20, 1926 — October 29, 2017

Charles Joe Schuler, 91, son of Charley & Blanche Schuler and husband of Rose Marie Schuler, of Wichita, KS. passed away Oct. 29 at Travanse Living in Olathe, KS.
Joe was born and grew up in Wichita, Kansas. His father Charley owned and operated a bakery. As a youth, an enterprising Joe popped and sold popcorn outside the movie theater next door to the bakery. Business was good until the movie theater got its own popcorn machine and put Joe out of business.
Joe attended Wichita East High School, joining the Navy Cadet Program. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served 2 years, and was honorably discharged in 1946 as Seaman Second Class. Joe then married his high school sweetheart Rosie Estle in 1946 and were together for 70 wonderful years. After his discharge Joe and Rosie moved to Sunflower Kansas and started a family while Joe attended the University of Kansas, hitchhiking the 25 miles each way daily.
Joe earned his Bachelors degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1948 and became an engineer for Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita where he retired as Program Director of the KC-135 aircraft.
In the early 1980s they vacationed in Holiday Island, Arkansas and then eventually moved there to retire. Joe loved golf, playing almost daily and was a volunteer income tax preparer for 10 years. They spent many years entertaining their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on the lake and golf course at Holiday Island, as well as the sights and sounds of nearby Branson, Missouri.
Joe is survived by his sister Sue Fitzthum and her husband Bob Fitzthum of Wichita KS, and Dixie Backstrom of Yale, MI, daughter Nancy Whitcomb and son Jay Schuler both of Holiday Island, AR., daughter Kim Wright and her husband Ray Wright of Shawnee KS, and by 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as "Opa". He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rosie, daughter Lee Anne Schuler of Mission, KS, son Mark Schuler of Prairie Village, KS, and grandson Tyler Schuler of Wichita, KS. Services will be held at 11am on Friday, November 3 at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost, KCMO 64131.
