Obituary

Carol Ann Howell, 82, of Hanover, Kansas, and formerly of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on May 19, 2026, at Cambridge Place Senior Living in Marysville, Kansas.

Visitation will begin at 10:15 a.m., Monday, June 29, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church located at 2552 Gillham Rd, Kansas City, Missouri, 64108, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m.

Carol was born on December 25, 1943, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Clarence and Frances (Meier) Schwartz. She grew up near Hanover, attended Limestone Country School, and graduated from Hanover High School in 1961.

Following high school, Carol moved to Topeka, Kansas, where she worked for Hallmark Cards. She also lived in Montrose, Colorado and Kansas City where she had a long career with the Harrisonville Cass R-IX School District. She served for 30 years as the Manager of Food Service, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. After retirement, she returned to Hanover in 2012 to be closer to family.

Carol enjoyed sewing, cooking, and baking, and she especially loved taking bus trips with family and friends. She also treasured the time she spent in the Ozarks with her companion, Frank Heyna. More than anything, Carol valued the time she shared with her family and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Private William C. Howell in 1982; her brother, Jerry Schwartz; and her companion, Frank Heyna, in 2014.

Survivors include her son, James Howell of Kansas City, Missouri; siblings, Ruth Morford, Harold (Mary Lou) Schwartz, Dennis (Sharon) Schwartz, David Schwartz, and Allen (Kathy) Schwartz; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, two great-great-nieces, and one great-great-nephew.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Carol's memory may be made to a battered women's shelter of your choice.
