Barbara R. Culver

September 29, 1934 — March 10, 2017

Barbara R. Culver, 82, passed away March 10, 2017. The rosary will be prayed at 4pm Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 at St. Thomas More Church, 11822 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO followed by a visitation until 5:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5:30pm followed by a reception in More Hall. Interment will be 9am Thursday at Calvary Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions to St. Thomas More Catholic Church or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).
Barbara was born September 29, 1934 in the home at 52nd and Rockhill Road to Henry and Helen (Purcell) Hodes. She attended St. Francis Grade School, St. Teresas Academy and the Catholic Quincy College in Quincy, Illinois. Barbara then worked in the accounting office of the family business, Prier Brass Manufacturing Co. She married the love of her life, Jerome "Jerry" Culver, on August 11, 1956 and they were married for 60 beautiful years.
Barbara went back to work after her "baby" entered 1st grade, working 9-3 while the children were in school. She was a highly valued claims manager for Dodson Insurance Group for over 25 years. Barbara was an excellent mathematician, accomplished pianist, crossword puzzle aficionado, and avid reader. After retirement, she became a skilled volunteer Braille Transcriber and enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital.
Barbara had many groups of friends that she enjoyed and held dear. She loved tap and line dancing classes taught by her big sister, Ginger; playing cards and enjoying lake trips with her Poker Club cousins; spending time with her St. Teresas Alumnae; and traveling with her husband, family and friends.
Mom was a firm, wise and outrageously fun-loving mother (yes, she sent us to school with our hair dyed green for St. Patricks Day). She taught us that no problem was too big and she never let life get her down. Shell be remembered by her children and grandchildren for her gentle loving care, listening without preaching, wonderful laugh, and vibrant blue eyes. Most important to mom was her Roman Catholic faith. She taught us to be faith-filled servants, enjoyed daily Mass with Jerry in their retirement, and had a devotion to Mother Mary and the rosary. She leaves a huge void in our hearts and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 60 years, infant sister Mary Jo, brother Dick Hodes, sister Ginger Heft, sisters-in-law Margaret Hodes, Barbara Hodes, and brother-in-law Curtis Chavers. Survivors include four children, Robert J. Culver, Carolyn R. Eubank (Randall), Joseph A. Culver (Julie), and Patricia M. Keane (Paul); eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brother Thomas Hodes, sister Jane LaGue (Ben), sisters-in-law Dolores Chavers and Rita Culver, and brother in law Sack Heft.
Arrangements are under the direction of Muehlebach Funeral Care.
