Ann S. Matheny

Ann Spears Matheny passed away peacefully at home on February 8, 2023. She was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on June 22,1930 to George and Eugenia Spears, who had immigrated to the United States from Greece. Ann attended Lawrence High School and the University of Kansas where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. With her first husband Herbert John Barr II, she raised four children in Western Kansas and Lawrence before moving to Kansas City in 1978. In 1984 she married the love of her life, Edward T. Matheny, Jr.

Throughout her life, Ann held volunteer roles in multiple organizations. She was an avid bridge player, playing regularly until her passing. Ann enjoyed good health and led an active life; she especially loved horseback riding and tennis.

Beloved mother and wife, Ann was the core of her family. She is survived by her husband, Edward Matheny, her children Stephanie and Kevin Leek, Matthew and Lisa Barr, Jennifer Barr Whaley, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Her husband’s children Edward T. Matheny, III, Nancy Matheny, and their families also survive her.

A private service was held for the family at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral on February 11, 2023. She is deeply missed.
