Lee Petty

September 15, 1930 — July 2, 2021

Lelia Ann Petty, 90, died of natural causes on July 2, surrounded by her family and loving caretakers from Aberdeen Village and Elara Caring Hospice. Lee, or Honey as she was called by many, was born on September 15, 1930, in Springfield, MO, to Robert and Catherine Conner. She graduated from Lebanon High School and attended William Woods College before transferring to MU, where she became a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and a lifelong MIZZOU fan. There she met her future husband of 55 years, Ralph Petty. They were married in 1951 and moved to Kansas City. She spent the next seven decades raising five children (each was her favorite), hosting social events (she was a partier), playing bridge (night and day), singing in the choir (like her mother), attending Bible study (a.k.a. the Sack Lunch Bunch), cooking (awesome French toast, fried chicken and potato salad) and going to sporting events (KC Royals or Little League were equally important). She loved her children tenderly and ferociously a legacy she passed on to the next generation. Nearly blind for the last ten years of her life, she never lost her spirit.
She is survived by her brother Bob Conner (Sheila) of Warren, Ohio; her children Cathy Broockerd (Terry), Mindy McDermott (Rick), Doug Petty (Barbara), Mark Petty (Elizabeth), all of Kansas City, and Janice Woods of Osage Beach; her grandchildren Todd Broockerd (Chelsea), Randy Broockerd (Chrissy), Stephanie Mertel (Brad), Renee Johnson (Jeff), Allison Petty, Conner Petty and Tyler Woods; and great-grandchildren JD, Mason, Max, Summer, Sydney and Camille, and cousins, nieces and nephews around the country. A memorial service and reception will be held at The Kirk of Kansas City on July 12, 10:30 a.m. (11430 Wornall, KCMO 64114). In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Kirk of Kansas City, or a charity of your choice.
