Daniel Robert Needham

Dan Needham, 58, of Kansas City passed away October 19th. He was born in Leavenworth, KS to Robert Endriss and Patricia Lou (Edmonds) Needham. Blessed with his mothers musical gifts, he grew up playing the trumpet and took on an outsize role in his school band at Leavenworth High School, as he would come to do in all areas of his life. He left college early to travel with his band and never looked back. Having worked in flower shops since he was a teenager, he eventually channeled his creative spirit into a new enterprise, providing beauty and comfort to so many when he opened Needham Floral in 1987. For 29 years, Needham Floral provided vibrant adornment for every chapter of life, helping customers celebrate births, weddings, funerals, and every important moment in between. In this endeavor, Dan was assisted by a remarkable set of employees who contributed their own creativity and artistry, and cherished him as a boss, mentor, and friend.After setting up shop in his first location on 63rd St. in Brookside, Dan met Mary Hogerty, then working at Euston Hardware a few steps down the street. They married in 1990 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Brookside, where they later would baptize their two children, Katie and Michael. As a husband and a father, Dan filled the home with laughter, love, and music. He was immensely proud of both of his children and made sure they never took life too seriously.Dan joined the Catholic Church in 2001. St. Peters Parish became the core community for the Needham family and the focus of Dans volunteer work. After closing Needham Floral in August 2014, he joined the parish staff as the Director of Social Services. In that role he positively impacted the lives of countless people in the community through supporting his clients in the food pantry, working with his VIPs, preparing meals for funerals, planting in the parish garden, and providing rent and other assistance to neighbors in need. Dans life was an example not just of service but of the joy that comes only though working for others.Dan was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. In addition to his wife and children he is survived by his brother Jeff Needham (Cristie), mother-in-law Martha Hogerty, brothers-in-law John Hogerty (Morgan) and Chris Hogerty (Jaime), nieces and nephews Jack, Nora, Tip, Quin, and Leo Hogerty, and many friends and extended family members who loved him dearly. All services will be held at St. Peters Catholic Church at 701 E. Meyer Blvd in Kansas City, MO. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 24th from 4:30-7:30pm (rosary at 4:30), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 25th at 11am. A private burial with the immediate family will follow. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Peters Social Services or Kansas City Young Audiences
