Alwyn "Al" Stanley Schaeffer, age 92, died on Monday, January 17th, 2022, with the caring hands of Kansas City Hospice House and family at his side.
Al was born on April 16, 1929, in Omaha, Nebraska to George Schaeffer and Helen Josephine (Traskoski) Schaeffer. He moved to Kansas City at a young age and attended St. Stephens Catholic Elementary and De LaSalle Catholic High School. After graduating high school, he began as a reserve in the Navy, and was quickly drafted into the Korean War where he served from 1950 to 1954. Soon after, he married the love of his life, Carol Jean Renner, in Kansas City on September 4th, 1954.
Al began his career with Eastman Kodak, which stemmed from his Navy days as the ship photographer aboard the USS Toledo. He developed broad expertise at Kodak and was often known as a "jack of all trades." Once retired, he continued to have a passion for photography, coin collecting, history, astronomy, keeping up with current events and new technology. He loved spending time with his family and telling stories that we all loved to hear, even if we had heard them before. His endearing sense of humor will be dearly missed.
Al was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers Delbert, Edward, Duane and sister Evelyn. He is survived and held in loving memory by his wife Carol (Renner) Schaeffer; sister Helen Georgia Mathes; brother John; sons David (Laurel) and James; daughters Deborah and Loran (Michael Gassman); grandchildren Trevor (Liberty), Jared, Jennipher (Michael Eisenstein), Robyn (Jay Peacock), Ian (Christina), Brittany, Keaton, Allegra (Matthew Kincaid), Camielle (Michael Copland), Celeste (Brendan Houlehan), Dominic Gassman, Michael Lonergan, and Blaise Gassman; and great grandchildren, Morgan, Kyra, Savannah, Kaitlyn, Jamison, Joshua, Joseph, Keelyn, Ethan, Miraflores, and Serafina.
Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131, January 28th, 2022, with visitation beginning at 9:30am, Rosary at 10:30am and Mass at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kansas City Hospice House and/or Disabled Veterans.
